Mechanical effect

While attuned to this ring, you gain a +2 bonus to Charisma. The ring has 3 charges. When a creature you can see within 30 feet is incapacitated, defeated (reduced to 0 hit points), or has surrendered and is not in combat, you can use an action to expend 1 charge to cause the creature to immediately die, regardless of hit points or saving throws. When you do so, you regain hit points equal to 1d10 + your Charisma modifier. The creature’s body becomes lifeless and drained of vitality, with eyes dull and empty as if its soul were taken. The ring regains all expended charges daily at dawn. This effect cannot be used on creatures that are actively engaged in combat or who have not clearly surrendered.

Description

This obsidian ring set with a deep crimson gem pulses faintly with a spectral red glow when worn. Legends speak of its power to claim the souls of those who have fallen or yielded, drawing out their essence like smoke from their bodies. Crafted by a forgotten sovereign of shadows, it grants its bearer a commanding presence, but demands solemn judgment—its power can only be invoked upon the defeated, never amidst the clash of battle.

DM notes

This item fits Very Rare rarity by granting a strong but situational effect: instant death on a defeated or surrendered foe outside combat, balanced by limited charges and a recharge at dawn. The +2 Charisma bonus is thematic and within rarity limits. Attunement is required to limit sharing and stacking of the bonus and effect. The restriction against use in active combat keeps the item from being an unbalancing combat killer, making it a flavorful tool for narrative and roleplaying situations.
